Last week, I received an invitation to attend the first annual holiday pop-up shop organised by Creative Life – a collaboration of talented people promoting their own businesses. It was held in a beautiful home on the magnificent Val de Vie Polo Estate in the Cape Winelands.
Creative Life is the brainchild of three friends (Marcelle, Salome and Illie) with a love and passion for good food and wine, all things creative and lazy social gatherings. In between their full time jobs, they have managed to pull off something quite remarkable, hosting events that give creative people like themselves the opportunity to showcase their work and/ products. What I loved about the whole experience was the variety of brands and businesses on display- it wasn’t just another market. Everyone was so passionate about their products and it created a vibrant atmosphere.
Salome Knijenburg from Salomeinteriors had a magnificent display of her latest decor must-have’s that had me drooling and hauling out my wallet very quickly. Salome offers a full decor service – no job is too big or small. Salome assisted me with the decor of our new home last year and I can vouch for her efficiency, her incredible eye for detail and how she uses existing pieces of furniture and gives them a new lease on life. She is brilliant when it comes to conceptualising plans and layouts, and has assisted many new home owners finalising their house plans and choosing finishes, She firmly believes that its not the size of your space that matters, it’s what you need and do with the space that is most important. Contact Salome on her website or via Facebook.

Fleet Coffee Company is a mobile coffee business that sells high quality, barista styled coffee. I love the story behind Fleet, which gets its name from their Lieutenant Commander Barista, Cheslin Grobbler, who learned the barista trade whilst in the navy many years ago. At the time he was still in high school and very rebellious in nature. The navy seemed to be a good platform to address this rebelliousness, and so started the journey of Fleet Coffee Company. Years later, after completing his diploma in Theology and also playing rugby semi-professionally for Boland, Cheslin started to work as a barista in a coffee shop in Wellington. It was here that he was introduced to Labit – a consultancy that helps disadvantaged communities build sustainable businesses. Established in January 2015, Fleet Coffee Company seeks to give similar opportunities to the youth and show them alternatives to crime related activities in our communities. Contact Cheslin via Facebook or email fleet email@example.com for any functions that require a mobile coffee station.
Lord’s Wines lies 500m above sea-level in the mountains surrounding Robertson in the fertile McGregor valley, amidst fynbos and proteas. The higher, cooler altitude makes it suitable for producing Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay. Started by Jacie Oosthuizen in 2003, and named after Lord’s Cricket Ground in London (Jacie is a huge fan of the game and the grounds), his wines have gone on to win numerous awards. Follow the road to nowhere from the village of McGregor and attend a tasting on the farm. You can also order their wines via their website, or follow them on Facebook.
